Tis the season to... paint our windows!
Local artist paints unique festive designs on the restaurant windows
28/11/2011
We decided to leave the tinsel and baubles in the boxes downstairs in favour of something really unique this Christmas. Brighton is brimming with artistic talent and we wanted to make the most of this in our fabulous South Lanes location.
After a quick Facebook campaign, we found Alice Pattulo who graduated from Brighton University in 2010 with a First Class Honours in Illustration. Working predominantly with screen printing, Alice is inspired by the 1950s both in her work and the way she dresses.
After finally sourcing the right pens in the perfect (and much debated) Christmas colours, Alice got to work - creating simple but beautiful festives designs of trees, robins, snowflakes, lights and tinsel, scattered over our massive windows.
We couldn't be happier with the results and think it creates a really cosy, arty and festive environment for our December customers. Perfect to gaze at whilst the shoppers shuffle past and you enjoy a spicy glass of mulled wine!

Britain's Best Dish: The Chefs
Food for Friends on ITV1's professional cooking competition.
16/11/2011
We were absolutely delighted to be selected by ITV to participate in Britain’s Best Dish: The Chefs. With all restaurants featuring in the Good Food Guide, the programme unites some of Britain's best chefs while celebrating great British cooking.
Three carnivorous judges made it more of a challenge for vegetarian cooking but Head Chef Lisa did us proud with her beautiful Wild Mushroom and Suet Pudding (served with a potato and parsnip gateaux, redcurrant port reduction, sticky braised cabbage and chestnut cream). You can judge Lisa's dish for yourselves as it's on our sensational Christmas 2011 Menu.
The programme is shown at 5pm on Wednesday 15th November 2011 or catch up on ITV Player.

Pumpkin Carving with Middle Street School
We invited 10 pupils to design and help carve pumpkins for Halloween!
21/10/2011
The combination of sharp kitchen knives, enthusiastic children and cakes could have been a recipe for complete disaster but the morning turned out to be a spooky success!
Head Chef Lisa started the event with a fascinating history of Halloween and the pumpkin - apparently we used to carve potatoes and turnips instead! It was then time for the serious bit - designing the pumpkin faces. After intercepting a few 'creative' efforts, the adults took over and helped the children transfer their creations onto their chosen pumpkins with tracing paper. We then let the little ones sit back and relax with some fresh brownies and scones while we had the tricky job of carving the faces with some exceptionally sharp knives!
The morning finished with a tour of the restaurant and kitchens with head chef Lisa. We then bid farewell to our Middle Street School friends who all left with 1 pumpkin, 1 certificate, 8 fingers and two thumbs. Hurrah!
For more photos of the morning go to our Facebook album.

Having studied Creative Embroidery at Brighton Technical College - a course organised by Goldsmiths, University of London, Jessica has had some of the best training in the country.
