What's on Guide
What's on Guide's Louise Williams reviews Food for Friends
31/08/2009
...A restaurant is going to get repeat business out of me by ticking specific boxes. Quality ingredients cooked properly from a choice on the menu for even the fussiest of eaters. Attentive service from the staff and the perfect ambience. Food for Friends offered all of the above, I'm already planning my next visit...

Vegan Magazine 'Off the hoof' round up of the best vegan eateries in Brighton

This is Brighton's original vegetarian restaurant established in 1981. Not as posh as Terre a Terre and a tadge more family friendly, Food for Friends sits sociably somewhere between Terre a Terre and the George. They have a good selection of vegan options including a 'chocolate torte - rich dark chocolate truffle baked on a hazelnut biscuit base served with summer berry compote' and usually apple crumble. Close tot he seafront they also woo English tourists with a wonderfully English afternoon tea and scones with jam.

It was a lovely sunny day when I found myself in Brighton for a lunchtime meeting. I ordered the Halloumi and mango salad and we chose a mixed plate of olives, tamari coasted seeds and wasabi coated cashew nuts to nibble while we waited. I liked the idea of having a selection - we even had a variety of olives.
The salad was beautifully presented, with fresh mango, avocado and deep fried halloumi placed around a mound of salad leaves (no lettuce). The halloumi arrived still warm and was delicious. The salad dressing was based on mango juice and I was unsure of combining a sweet dressing on a salad. By the time I had finished the plate I was converted! Different but well balanced flavours.
The salad was also very filling so despite a tempting dessert menu I went straight to coffee. This was served in a generously sized cup and is made a lovely end to a perfect meal.
I dined once before at Food for Friends - about 3½ years ago. My memory is of a rather dark, dimly lit set of rooms. There are now new owners who have redecorated and refurbished. The rooms are now light, bright, airy and welcoming.
They food has changed also, with the emphasis being on high standards not only of the ingredients but in the presentation and service. On my next visit I will definitely leave room for dessert !

Reviews of the month. The weekender - Brighton featuring Food for Friends
01/12/2008
Eat...We liked the stylish Food for Friends, a stylish vegetarian restaurant in the Lanes without a hint of knit-your-own-muesli attitude, where we had stuffed portobello mushrooms with a pesto sauce, and sweet potato gratin with roasted red pepper coulis.

Diner review - October 2008
30/09/2008
We'd been to Food For Friends before on a recommendation and loved it then. It certainly didn't disappoint this time either. The food is great, my tofu pockets as a starter were particuarly good, packed with flavour and a really interesting idea (totally blows away any misconceptions of bland taste etc...). The value for money and the service are excellent, I couldn't recommend it enough.
