Landmark vegetarian restaurant in Brighton
Food for Friends has created original and exciting vegetarian cooking in Brighton’s beautiful South Lanes since 1981. The restaurant was originally owned by Simon Hope and was a great student magnet with big portions and a laid-back hippy vibe. Ramin and Jane Mostowfi took over the restaurant in 2004 and wanted to modernise the space without losing the friendly and comfortable atmosphere. An elegant and contemporary environment was created which better reflected the restaurants new direction – gourmet vegetarian cooking.
“We have had some fantastic members of staff along the way who have helped shape both the restaurant and its food. We have certainly encountered some very steep learning curves over the years but, with a great bunch of staff and the support of many amazing customers, we truly believe this is what has made Food for Friends the much-loved Brighton restaurant that it is today.”
The restaurant was founded with the ethos of serving global vegetarian cuisine that was not ‘just a load of old lentils’. It was a place that Brighton’s mix of eclectic locals knew and loved. It was a regular occurrence to see scores of hungry people queuing around the building, all waiting to order their lunch at the infamous Food for Friends counter. Food for Friends is still enjoying the same level of popularity but for different reasons. When we took over the restaurant in 2004 we wanted to bring this popular Brighton restaurant up to date. Our customers told us that they wanted to have a relaxed, friendly and comfortable environment to eat good food in, as they felt that they had outgrown the hippie café which was the Food for Friends of the 80s and 90s.
A vital part of good vegetarian cooking lies in seasoning and flavours. It takes a little more thought (and a lot more preparation!) to make food without meat truly flavoursome. Today it is much easier to eat a vegetarian diet as the variety of foods available is greater now than ever before. We pride ourselves on serving innovative and delicious dishes that keep not only vegetarians but all lovers of good food coming back, year after year.
We believe in supporting local producers whenever possible, using the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients to deliver high quality, great value food. The restaurant is warm and welcoming, offering a relaxed and unpretentious gourmet dining experience where customers pay for great food, not freshly pressed linen.
